Black leaders, black inclusion week

Right now, Black inclusion in the UK is the subject of many discussions in society, organisations and around family dining tables in a way that it never has been. People across all walks of life are awakening to the inequities that have existed and persisted around them for so long and are asking many questions, questions of their governments, questions of their organisational and community leaders, and questions of themselves. These questions are often accompanied by confusion, discomfort, and fear.

In this awakening, there is also solidarity, compassion, understanding, collaboration, and hope. Many people across the globe have shown great solidarity and compassion with Black people by taking part in marches. Many have shown great understanding by seeking knowledge and reflecting on their own journeys. There have also been countless examples of collaborations and hope with many seeking to understand how they can make a difference working as individuals and organisations to do this. While this garners hope for an equitable future, this solidarity, compassion, understanding, collaboration, and hope must continue for years to come for us to achieve a truly just society.

This is why Black Leaders will lead and facilitate a national annual Black Inclusion Week across the UK. This week will be a celebration of Black people in the UK and a reminder of the importance of ensuring a fair and just society through the inclusion of ALL.

What is Black inclusion week?

Black Inclusion Week, which has been in development since June 2020 is an observance event that raises awareness of the importance of Black inclusion and creates a platform for change to enable true equality for people of African and Caribbean descent.

Black Inclusion Week is important because:

  • The world must not forget the challenges that Black people face, we must continue to openly discuss the issues and work together towards greater inclusion.
  • There is a desire to understand, learn, and change in so many ways. We can facilitate this through Black Inclusion Week; thus encouraging learning, reflection, and actions towards inclusion to be taken.
  • To really unearth and address all the issues, we need prolonged focus and to build momentum and deliver the changes that will make a difference.

Our aims with Black Inclusion Week are to:

1. Make us stronger as one community

We want to support understanding, care, and support for each other as we rebuild our strength. We know that together we will heal, so we can rise.

2. Empower all and facilitate action

Increase education and raise awareness through tools and resources to enable individuals and organisations to make tangible progress towards Black inclusion.

3. Be a celebration of Black people in the UK

Amplify the voices of Black people across the UK. Celebrate the achievements and impact that we have had and continue to have in Britain.

4. Create a commitment towards change

Encourage everyone to join us by pledging #OnePromise that will eradicate racism and foster Black inclusion.

5. Connect us through collaboration

Partner and collaborate with individuals, organisations, communities, and allies who are ready for and committed to change.

When is Black inclusion week?

Black Inclusion week will take place from 10th to 16th May 2021. Activities and toolkits are in development which will enable all to take part and continue on the journey of solidarity, compassion, understanding, collaboration, and hope.
