The World’s Most Attractive Employers (WMAE) list for 2017 has been announced featuring a number of our members, including PwC, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, HSBC and Cisco.

The list is released annually by Universum, who work with top universities, alumni groups and professional organisations in order to gather insights from students and professinals across 60 countries. This information is then used to advise employers on how they can best attract and retain talent that fits both their culture and purpose. This list gives an insight into how students and recent graduates view companies from around the world, delving into what candidates are hoping to see from a workplace.

Here are just a couple of our members who were featured on the list:

PwC – PwC have taken the initiative to learn from their younger employees by implementing a reverse-mentoring scheme, which includes enlisting digital-savvy employees to reverse-mentor their colleagues in social media “bootcamps”. These are designed to teach the staff who may not be as confident with social media how to best navigate social media platforms. The scheme has been a success and now everyone is on-board and internal communications and updates and posted to PwC’s Twitter page.

In addition to this, PwC have also created a flexible working plan that accommodates staffs’ personal priorities, as PwC realised how important flexible working is for their employees. This initiative allows members within the team to agree on their work-at-home days, early-departure nights and scheduled personal time. PwC say that it is not about working less, but it is instead about working differently.

Morgan Stanley – Morgan Stanley hires its graduates from a range of degree subjects outside of banking and finance, such as language, history and music. The bank does this as they believe that if they only hire graduates with one kind of degree, they will only ever have one kind of view or opinion. This allows them to create a more diverse workforce, that embraces the thoughts of all of its employees. Morgan Stanley is looking for recruits that have a broad view of the world. They also offer in-house training programmes for any new recruits who may need further training in financial modelling.

Barclays, HSBC and Cisco also featured on the World’s Most Attractive Employers list 2017.

In addition to the companies that were featured on the list, the following trends were also found:

  • Students’ from Business and Engineering/IT courses are veering away from employers that have more than 1000 employees, and are instead favouring smaller organisations.
  • Although not the only platform, social media continues to play a large part in how students learn about and communicate with potential future employers.
  • There is a significant global interested in work/ life balance and talent.
  • Students’ pursuit of career goals like work/life balance, job security and company stability lends to the increase in gender diversity within organizations.
  • Employers who are able to localise their message to potential employees create brand stories that resonate best with students. Although the employer attributes that students desire are fairly similar, regardless of location, there are still enough deviations for localisation to be important.
