Financial Services Compensation Scheme: Diversity in Action

At Financial Services Compensation Scheme, Diversity and Inclusion has become an increasingly important focus.

When we talk about diversity we mean respecting and valuing all forms of difference in individuals, and as an already diverse organisation we felt it was important for us to recognise and celebrate this with our colleagues.

Therefore, over the last year we have organised a whole host events that have done just this, celebrated the diversity of our employees and encouraged them to get involved with the diversity focused organisations within the community.

The LGBT cause has been of particular interest to us, with two big highlights during the year.

Firstly, the FSCS was delighted to join the London Pride Parade for the first time. This year the parade was led by the flags of the United States, Ireland and Mozambique, recognising recent gay rights progress in the three countries. These flags were followed by the family of the world famous code-breaker Alan Turing who was prosecuted for being gay. Then over 250 groups comprising of over 30,000 people marched through central London. There was colour everywhere with feathers, flags, banners, music and above all people, from all parts of society marching together as one.

This was the first Pride we as an organisation had taken part in, but it was also the first event all of the regulatory “family” have participated in. Alongside us were the Financial Conduct Authority, Bank of England, Payments Systems Regulator, Money Advice Service, and the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Over a million people watched the Parade, the largest audience they had ever had. A million people seeing our FSCS t-shirts and banners was not only a great way to raise awareness of what we do and the difference we make in people’s lives, but also that FSCS supports its LGBT employees. .

Secondly, FSCS was also delighted to recently receive the Positive East Community Champion Award. Throughout the last year we have been working closely with the charity, and we were honoured when Paul Fleming, Director of Fundraising and Communications, invited us to attend their AGM meeting where he had this to say about our work…

“The Positive East Community Champion Award is an important award. I am sure that those of you who, like me, have HIV, have probably been discriminated against in some way because of the virus and felt, or indeed directly experienced the stigma that still surrounds it. So it really matters that there are companies out there, whether they are big or small, who make a stand against this.

Who do things to combat stigma and discrimination. Who in doing so chip away at the ignorance. They alone are not going to beat it. But we know that together, eventually, we will beat the stigma and beat HIV.

Therefore, we want to thank one of those organisations for doing so much. Not only do they refuse to tolerate any HIV related stigma and discrimination, but they have supported us in lots of practical ways too. We started a conversation with them over 12 months ago and since then they have been amazing

  • They raised some money for us around World AIDS Day.
  • They came and tidied up our garden
  • One of their staff volunteers on reception one evening a week
  • They have helped facilitate a meeting where we have been able to introduce ourselves to other companies
  • They invited us and some volunteers to a social night during the week they were celebrating diversity and inclusion. And it was a great night, a lot of fun, thanks very much indeed
  • They are helping our staff with our Employability course
  • They have offered professional mentoring and support to our staff team
