What attracted you to EY?
I always wanted to pursue a career in Business or Finance, and when I spent time with EY on the work experience programme, I was totally taken aback by how friendly and approachable the people were. This, along with the fact I loved the working environment I had been introduced to, massively encouraged me to apply for the Business Apprenticeship. As I learned more about EY, the fact that EY was a global brand, with clients and offices all over the world was really exciting to me.
Responsibilities, development and collaboration.
I’m responsible for assisting with the preparation and review of various corporation tax returns for our clients. Day to day, I work with my colleagues to prepare returns and provide guidance to our more junior members of the team. I also regularly attend virtual client calls myself, and pre-pandemic would have the opportunity to attend meetings with senior members of the team. I really enjoy the fact that I have lots of ‘face to face’ contact with our clients, which gives me the opportunity to build my confidence and assist them with queries.
Some of my time is spent working on the audit of tax for some of our audit clients. I also relish the opportunity to get involved with attending careers talks with local schools and colleges as I love meeting new people and sharing my experiences with those who are just starting to think about their own career paths.
Working at EY in Newcastle
EY GCR Newcastle clients range from small local businesses, to large multinational global brands. One of my main clients is a global delivery services company, I also work with clients in retail and packaging, automotive and manufacturing. I’ve been lucky enough to gain exposure to lots of different clients in my time at EY so far and have met some fantastic clients along the way. I am part of a fantastic team of people in EY GCR Newcastle who have supported me since the beginning and helped me to build up my knowledge of corporate tax, these people have also given me the opportunity to be part of big global engagements in sectors such as retail and delivery services. For some of these clients, I have become one of the main points of contact for the client, which is very rewarding. Working on these engagements has helped me to develop my confidence and relationship building skills.
An evolving role in GCR
Since I joined EY, my role has changed as I have gained experience, I now have more opportunities to have more regular catch up calls with clients and have become one of the main points of contact. I also assist more with reviewing the work of the more junior members of the team and have the opportunity to help with coaching which I really enjoy.
Proudest career moment
Finding out that I had passed my last exam and that I was a qualified Chartered Accountant. I worked really hard for over 4 years, and so to finally qualify was an amazing feeling.
