Essex County Council are investing £27.7 million into a new Independent Living housing programme, which will allow people over 55 with care needs to live in their own homes whilst receiving 24 hour care and support on site. The council is working in partnership with district councils and leading specialist housing providers to deliver the project, which will result in the creation of 1800 new Independent Living homes in the county between now and 2021.

The aim is to give people the opportunity to continue living independently in their own homes whilst providing for their care needs. The housing, also known as Extra Care or Assisted Living, will be modern, easy to maintain and will have technology to support residents.

The benefits include:

  • an attractive, modern flat with your own front door
  • freedom to come and go as you please
  • choice of who provides your personal care
  • dining service
  • leisure activities
  • local shops, services and public transport within easy reach
  • safe and supported environment
  • the option to continue Living with your partner if only one of you has a care need
  • meeting new friends
  • being active in your community
