Engaging with social media

Engaging with social media

Blog by Jenny Yerworth on Engaging with social media

In some areas of society, social media can be seen as, to name but a few, a distraction, annoying, anti-social and time consuming.

This is how some view see it. People think that it rules their lives therefore giving little time to hold a conversation with other people.

There is another side to this argument in that nowadays for some careers, to be social media savvy is essential, through communication, building a profile, with jobsites. The list can go on as social media is very much part of our lives.

Not everyone wants to be part of this culture, so they limit their involvement with it, but by limiting their involvement they are reducing their chances of finding employment.

There are times when people have had to give up some element of social media as they have been victim of trolls. Sarah Vine, wife of Michael Gove, and columnist in the Daily Mail gave up Twitter as she was being plagued by trolls.

John Humphreys wrote an article about social media in the Daily Mail, saying how time consuming it can be, particularly if one was to read all the responses on Twitter. Like all social media platforms there are advantages and disadvantages.

We can choose how to use it, and what we put out in the open. Like with anything it's being responsible. Overuse of some platforms can be damaging when looking for employment, as our use of it can be seen as not appropriate.

There instances where Twitter has been known to help individuals as this can be used as a forum for asking questions, an example of this is when Rory Cellan-Jones asked a question about extended life batteries for a smartphone. He also had a problem with his computer, so he got on to Twitter and within minutes the problem was solved.

This highlights that social media has it's place in society today and benefits those who use it. The same goes for those who are looking for work. They are able to find out about the company they have applied to.

It would be good to think that the positives outway the negatives with regards to social media and people would feel comfortable using it.
