Enfield celebrates Black History Month

Local songstress Janet Kay, the Queen of Lovers Rock, and Victor Romero Evans came to the Dugdale Centre in Enfield (3 September) to highlight the thrilling new programme for Enfield Council’s Black History Month which is being launched in October.

Best known for her 1979 hit ‘Silly Games’ Janet has gone on to record numerous albums, and is also an actress.

October is Black History Month in the UK; and is an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness of black cultural heritage, history and experiences today. Black History Month is for everybody and all events are free or low cost, so get involved and get inspired.

The programme for Enfield’s Black History Month is a kaleidoscope of screenings, workshops and performances and can be found here: Link

Performances include:
• Stephen K Amos – Comedian and broadcaster Stephen returns to Enfield again to bring his own brand of humour
• Niburu Film Month season – A month of gripping films
• The Norm of Greatness – the words of Dr Martin Luther King performed
• Mandela Let Freedom Reign – the story of the great man retold
• Lovers Rock Monologues – Performed by sell out stars Janet Kay and Victor Romeo Evans

There are also a number of events scheduled around the borough being held in local libraries and by other organisations.

Cllr Rohini Simbodyal, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport Youth and Public Health for Enfield Council said “Its fantastic to see Janet, who lives in Edmonton, and Victor introduce us to this year’s packed schedule of event for Black History Month.

“There really is something for everyone in the programme, with comedy, speeches, music, dance and theatre. Make sure you check out the events and book early as some of the shows will sell out extremely quickly.”

Cllr Yasemin Brett, Cabinet Member for Community Organisations for Enfield Council said “Through the wide range of artistic and cultural events held during Black History Month in Enfield, there is an opportunity to discuss, explore and celebrate the history and contributions of our black communities.

“Black History Month gives a focus and greater visibility to these issues and their importance and is an opportunity for everyone to get involved.”
