Early Careers Month - Great employers for early career professionals

Just finished university? Thinking about what happens next? Jobs for life are hard to come by nowadays but there are ways to build a career with employers who invest in you as much as you do in them.

Many large companies offer graduate schemes o bring in new talent. These are structured training programmes, integrated into a company’s Human Resources offering to develop future leaders of their organisation. They’re more than a foot in the door, they’re a step into a great career.

They’re also both professionally and personally rewarding. In 2018 around a sixth of places offered starting salaries over £40,000. Top-paying companies  offered starting rates of at least £45,000.

 

How long do graduate schemes last?

On average, a graduate scheme programme is for one or two years and completing one will get you  the opportunity for a permanent role. They can be in a number of specialisms from finance, retail, HR and marketing, to management and law

The Civil Service Fast Stream "offers talented graduates an accelerated route to leadership in the Civil Service", and could see you working towards making a positive difference for the general public in anything from Pensions, Citizenship, Tax Credit, Immigration or Benefits. They have roles in Finance, Health, Diplomacy and more. Starting salaries are between £25,000 - £28,000 with significant increases as you progress through the ranks.

Pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKline offer a Future Leaders Programme across a variety of roles and business areas. Graduates from a range of disciplines are welcome, including positions in Science, Engineering, IT, Finance, HR, Communications and Procurement. Their positions are anything from one to three years, and offer rotations, so you get a range of exposure to what they do. The starting salary is competitive and, overall, the programme offers a solid grounding in business operations.

Accenture UK is a highly-regarded consulting firm with offices around the world. Their graduate scheme offer graduates positions across their Strategy, Analytics, Software Engineering and Technology Architecture departments. Graduates spend their time at one of the main offices in Edinburgh, London, Manchester or Newcastle with some travel. Salaries are competitive for the sector.
