ECC: Promoting Inclusive Communities

Promoting Inclusive Communities

Inclusive communities are strong communities and we take our responsibility to promote inclusiveness seriously. We are proud of the great work we do- much of it award winning.

  1. We opened eight new specialist autism support centres in Spring 2017; one hosted in a primary school and another in a secondary school. The new centres aim to enable those young people to access mainstream schooling and spend most of their time in classes alongside their peers. The hubs will provide outreach services and ensure pupils with autism who attend mainstream schools, particularly at secondary schools, receive enhanced support. These schools, along with the Essex Specialist Teacher Service and the Educational Psychology Service, will also work to develop autism expertise across all schools in Essex. For pupils with more severe autism, additional places are being created as part of the council’s record £85 million investment in special schools in Essex.
  2.  Active Essex is a publicly funded organisation, hosted by us, whose aim is to make sporting and physical activities accessible to all Essex residents.
  3.  Our Apprentice Promotion and Brokerage Hub and Superfast Essex programme are helping to champion local Essex businesses and organisations by sponsoring the prestigious Essex Digital Awards 2018.
  4. Challenge Dementia is a national search for products, technologies and services that could transform the way people live with Dementia across the UK, helping them to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives for as long as possible. Led by us, Challenge Dementia is part of the Essex Challenge Prize Programme which seeks to tackle a range of social problems by discovering potential solutions, and speeding up their development.
  5. Essex Teaching Awards 2019 – Nominations for 2019 are now open.  We run an event that celebrates excellence in education and highlights the outstanding work of teachers and other staff in the county’s schools.
  6. Community Care Live – We are an award winning local authority and we are proud to have had winners at the national Social Worker of the Year Awards in 2014, 2016 and 2017.  We are also proud to be an event partner.
  7. Social Worker of the Year Awards - We are extremely proud to sponsor the Championing Social Work Values category, for the Social Worker of the Year awards.
  8. We support LGBT Adoption and Fostering - Sexuality is never a barrier when adopting or fostering in Essex. This year's National Adoption Week runs from 15 to 22 October; during the week we ran an 'introduce the adopters' campaign, showcasing the variety of people who have adopted. This not only busts any myths about the “perfect adopter" but also tells the stories behind the adoptions.
  9. We partner with Essex Pride's Summer event which is an annual celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) life in Essex and beyond.

This is an event for the whole community, and its more than just a huge party. Pride inspires everyone to embrace equality, and demonstrates that organisations and business, and people from all walks of life can join together and celebrate diversity.
