Spotlight – Neil Smith, Winner of the Employee of the Year 2018

“Essex is a great place to work because of its positive work environment; I work with professional colleagues both within and outside of my team.”    #workingforessex

Following on from the ‘You Make the Difference in Essex’ awards, we met up with Neil Smith, the winner of the Employee of the Year 2018 award.

Neil is the Principal Architect with Essex County Council and his role involves maintaining design and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle of Essex County Council’s school construction projects. From preparation of feasibility studies, obtaining and evaluating tenders, to responding to queries during construction, Neil plays a key role in it all.

Recently, Neil completed a challenging but rewarding feasibility study for the build of a new school for children with complex autism.   As an experienced architect, he put himself forward to take on this piece of work alongside his everyday workload; this made a real difference to Essex, as not only is he playing a pivotal role in the lives of children with complex autism, he has made significant cost savings for the Council by avoiding the need to employ other consultants.

This was a great project opportunity to contribute to the community and Neil spoke positively about the new knowledge that he gained from the experience, such as understanding the special requirements of the young people and how to tailor the building to meet their particular needs.

He felt that this project also gave other colleagues the opportunity to get involved, personally develop and make a difference.  Neil speaks about how it was only through being part of a strong, focused and professional team that the outcome was achieved.

Neil enjoys working for Essex because the work that he is involved with is for the good of the community.

A great example of why it is great to work and live in Essex.  Congratulations Neil!
