DVSA Supports Learning at Work Through Mentoring

DVSA Supports Learning at Work Through Mentoring

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and its’ employees took part in Learning at Work Week 2017 in order to highlight the importance of their mentoring scheme.

Mentoring has a number of benefits, for example if an employee feels that they need some guidance on a subject or task, then mentoring gives them the chance to speak this issue through with someone other than their manager, as their manager may not be as readily available to them.

Nadeem Aziz, a DVSA Business Change Manager, is mentored by Rachael Yokoo-Laurence, who is the Group Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing with the Department for Transport (DfT). The mentoring relationship that they have, not only contributes to Nadeem’s personal growth but also to her professional growth and it encourages cross-government working between DVSA and DfT.

Rachael says that ‘working as one team’ is part of their vision statement: “I work with colleagues across the country so it’s important I make those links with people in other parts of the business and understand who we’re working with.

“Mentoring across government means we can all create new relationships with people, other than the usual suspects in our respective bank of desks, so it’s really valuable to all.”

Nadeem says: “Rachael’s knowledge has been invaluable to me and working across-government has certainly helped me too. DVSA both values and depends on its people to achieve its vision of making DVSA a great place to work.

“Having a mentor can certainly help people to contribute towards achieving our vision.”

Take a look to see how Nadeem and Rachael have benefitted from being part of the mentoring scheme in this short video:

The Civil Services offer a mentor match-making scheme, as one of the ways that employees can find themselves a mentor in order to progress their development both professionally and personally.
