What dunnhumby are doing for Mental Health in 2019

Category: Disability (Learning/Mental/Physical)

Mental Health.

One in four of us have suffered or will suffer from mental ill health at some point in our lifetime, yet many are reluctant to talk about it.

At dunnhumby we want to encourage a culture and environment where people feel safe to speak up, and supported by practical measures. Which is why we have introduced dh Thrive – our new employee-led movement focusing on the mental health and emotional wellbeing of our people at dunnhumby.

What dunnhumby are up to

  • We have 9 fully qualified and trained Mental Health First Aiders in our London & Manchester offices
  • We have designed and rolled out our own Mental Health Awareness Training for all people managers
  • Employee Assistance Programme - an external provider dunnhumby partner with who can provide you with free, expert support and information to help with managing times when life feels bumpy or stressful. Confidential support is available 24 hours a day, online or by phone
  • dh Thrive Hub available on our intranet is available to dunnhumbians globally and features a new monthly newsletter Take 5 to Thrive, personal stories, MHFA contact details, loads of great tools and resources from stress-busting tips to healthy mind podcast recommendations, quick links to support services and much more.
  • Self-help materials contains everything from self-care tips, meditation techniques and recommended reading materials/apps to support dunnhumbians globally
  • Mental wellbeing survey – we ran a confidential survey to help dunnhumby better understand how people feel about their own mental wellbeing at work, and to understand what dunnhumbians would like to see from dh Thrive to support mental wellbeing. The data from the survey will be used to identify key issues to be fed back to the business, implemented in our training and used to inform the dh Thrive strategy.

Events

For our launch event, we had Ben Bidwell (The Naked Professor), life coach and mental wellness advocate joined us to open the conversation in dh about mental health and emotional wellbeing widely within the business. He gave us some insight into his personal experiences and impact of toxic masculinity, and discussed the benefits sharing our vulnerabilities with others so that together we can work to reduce the stigma that there still is about mental ill health.

We have many more events planned over the coming year!

Next Steps

Looking ahead, we are keen to make progress on our four pillars that make up our strategy:

  1. Listen: providing someone objective and empathetic to talk to.
  2. Upskill: building manager confidence to better support their teams and peers.
  3. Educate: creating an environment where people understand what it means to look after their mental wellbeing and how best to do so – taking advantage of the support available.
  4. Culture: opening the conversation around mental health and building a culture where people can talk about it freely.
