Double Award Success For DVLA

Last week saw the finals of the UK-wide Government Finance and Internal Audit Awards 2017 and colleagues from the DVLA scooped two prestigious awards. Congratulations to Lucy Cattroll, Finance Business Change, and DVLA’s Government Internal Audit Agency team (GIAA) led by Andrew Bagley, Head of Internal Audit, for their success. Lucy won the award for AAT Student of the year and Andrew picked up the award for Internal Audit Team Excellence of the year, which is fantastic news.

An annual event the Government Finance and Internal Audit conference support the Government’s programme of reforms, aimed at placing the finance function at the heart of decision making. The awards specifically recognise individuals and teams for their excellent work over the year.

Lucy was nominated for her work as an integral part of a project team to successfully migrate banking providers, playing an active role in the Finance Directorate Talent Pool and for leading on the development of a Finance Operations Away Day.

Lucy explained:

“I was completely shocked to have been shortlisted for the award. My three nominators Kathy Merchant, Finance Business Change, Head of Finance Operations Rebecca Rymer and DVLA Financial Controller Jamie Powell, kept the secret very well. I had absolutely no idea that they had put my name forward in the first place!  When Jamie told me, I really didn’t know what to say – first time for everything! I felt quite moved to know the people that I look up to had taken the time to do something so very kind and thoughtful, and considered me worthy of an award.”

The GIAA @ DVLA team were nominated for their audit work undertaken at DVLA. The panel looked at a series of technical reviews that the team have delivered at DVLA, recognising the quality of the work undertaken and technical and complex nature of some of those review activities. Gar-Yee Wong, Senior IT Audit Manager, and Andrew received the award on behalf of the GIAA @ DVLA team.

Competition at these events is very strong and it’s to the credit of both Lucy and Andrew’s team that they won these prestigious awards; all Government departments, agencies and arms length bodies are invited to put forward nominations against a number of criteria.

This year the awards ceremony took place last week in the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, where a shortlist of nominees waited with baited breath to discover who was going to be revealed as winners.

Lucy revealed:

“The awards evening was very impressive, with over 1,000 people in attendance. I had convinced myself that I wouldn’t be winning as my table was right at the back of the room and I assumed they’d have all the winners on closer tables... I was wrong.

“When my category came up I was on pins and when they called my name as the winner it felt like everything had stopped. I couldn’t believe it. My table were cheering and everyone was clapping – all I could think about was not falling over as I walked all the way from the back of the room to the stage! It was all very glamorous with lots of handshakes, photos taken and a fancy award with my name engraved on it.

“The overall experience has been such a whirlwind of emotions; between the shock, excitement and adrenaline rushes, I’ve had such an incredible time. Winning the award, coupled with the support and encouragement from my friends and colleagues in Finance, has truly highlighted how lucky I am to have such an amazing bunch of people to spend my working time with!”

Congratulations to both Lucy and everyone in the GIAA team on your well deserved success.
