Do We Need More 'Diversity Training' in the Workplace?

Diversity and Inclusion on red VERCIDA background

Diversity - something that not only involves how people see themselves but how they are perceived by others - influences people’s interactions. So, for a wide range of employees to function and work effectively together as one organisation, professionals need to deal with diversity and any issues concerning it.

Diversity is increasing as the years go by, and organisations are beginning to work together to take actions in the work place when needed.

For example, with the skills deficit is growing continuously, some industries have made it clear that breaking down gender barriers at work is vital for the future. In particular, they’ve identified that women should be encouraged to work in more male-dominated sectors.

Many people would argue that there is still more that needs to be done, but it becomes increasingly challenging to implement effective solutions due the different types of companies (such as small start-ups who don’t entirely know how to recruit or run their businesses in a diverse manner).

Also, the workforce is rapidly changing and the working population is getting older, with more women and more people from ethnic minorities. It should go without saying that should be treated fairly at work and be free of any sort of discrimination whether it be age, race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation or gender reassignment. But, this sadly isn’t the case.

Back in February, Inside Out London sent CVs to 100 job opportunities. “Adam” and “Mohamed” - both having identical skills and experience - put diversity to the test. Adam was offered three times the numbers of interviews that Mohammed was. They also uploaded both CV’s to job sites online where Adam was contacted by four recruiters and Mohammed, two, clearly showing discrimination. To find out more on this, check out an article written by the BBC.

So, we clearly do need more diversity training in the workplace, particularly for those who are responsible for filling roles and interviewing candidates.

The benefits of a diversity at work provides not only productivity and profit, but a social harmony too – all of which leads to success. CIPHR say that the “more diverse your employees are, the greater set of skills and competencies your brand will have”. So, read what they have to say about why you should embrace a diverse workforce.

A good diversity programme at work has so many different beneficial effects on staff and organisations. Take a look the diversity section by Marshall E-Learning to help create an equal, diver and inclusive workplace.  Putting in the extra effort to help implement diversity into your workplace will mean you will have a whole new range of talented employees to help boost your business.
