Here at Diversityjobs & The Big IDEA we recently conducted research to find out how our clients are tackling sexual orientation and gender identity equality in the workplace. Who is going the extra mile to ensure equality, opportunity and fair treatment for all, irrespective of sexuality?

Barclays

At the top of our list is Barclays. Stonewall Star Performers, Barclays has been placed in the top ten of the Stonewall Top 100 Employers list no less than three times in the past five years. Barclays Continually looks for original ways to communicate its commitment to LGBT equality, for example, utilizing the impact of its Barclays ATMs across the UK during Pride in London where it was once again headline sponsor.

Lloyds Banking Group

Ranked at number 2 in Stonewall’s most recent list of Top 100 Employers regarding its LGBT-friendly policies and procedures. The Group has an active Rainbow network consisting of 4,500 colleagues, one of the biggest networks of its kind in the UK. Lloyds Banking Group has made public pledges to increase the engagement scores of LGBT colleagues to 70% by 2020, as part of their Helping Britain Prosper Plan. The Group has become the first UK organisation to broaden its staff healthcare plans to cover gender dysphoria.

Brighton & Hove City Council

Brighton & Hove City Council’s LGBT Workers Forum is known nationally as one of the finest in the country and the council are frequently contacted by both local and national partners to assist and guide in setting up their own networking groups. The forum holds quarterly meetings and the types of events that are provided include film screenings, discussions, training and development events. For the past few years, Brighton & Hove City Council has been acknowledged as a national leader in LGBT matters. They have excellent internal policies and work hard to endorse equality amongst the city’s communities.

ITV

ITV Pride is a network group for LGBT colleagues. Matt Scarff, the co-chair of ITV Pride is named in Campaign Magazine’s 2016 Top 10 List of LGBT+ Role Models. ITV are Chairs of Intermedia UK, the LGBT network group for people working across the media spectrum. ITV have worked with Stonewall to produce an anti-bullying video for schools. Leeds Beckett University

Rainbow Rose Forum is the University’s LGBT group and is open to all staff and students. The university has been named in the Stonewall Top 100 list of employers and Rainbow Rose received the Highly Commended Network Group Award in 2015. This reflects the range of activities, networks and dedicated persons who make Leeds Beckett one of the UKs most inclusive places to study and work in higher education.

Reed Smith

Reed Smith work closely with Stonewall to promote LGBT inclusion across the legal industry. In 2016, for the first time, Reed Smith entered the Stonewall Work Equality Index and ranked in the Top 100. Their LGBT network, PRISM, has also been acknowledged as a ‘Highly Commended Network’.

Mitie

Gary Zetter of Mitie won the Employee of the Year Award 2016 at the Excellence in Diversity Awards. As founding member of Mitie’s Diversity Steering Group he became Champion for their LGBT&Q network, Proud To Be. The network has brought great advantages to the Mitie ethos. This has emphasized Mitie as an employer of choice, helping to appeal to, employ and retain talented individuals with a positive workplace culture.

Viacom International Media Networks

Viacom’s networks take part in special activities and events every year in support of GLAAD’s Spirit Day, which raises awareness of bullying against the LGBT community. This year MTV won the award for Best Brand/Marketing Campaign at the British LGBT Awards and were acknowledged for their LGBT inclusive programming, the MTV Pride Pop Up Channel and the educational efforts of the Staying Alive Foundation. Logo TVs Trailblazers is an annual event and TV special that celebrates innovators and campaigners who are breaking new ground in LGBT civil rights.

British Council

As the UK’s primary cultural relations organisation the British Council is strongly committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. British Council’s LGBT network is mentored by Dan Fitz whose contribution to LGBT+ won him the 2013 Out & Proud UK Corporate Counsel Award. He is an inclusion and diversity role model and is included on a top 100 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) executive ranking.

Their well-established PRIDE network works in partnership with the organisation to nurture a positive, inclusive and caring environment for LGBT employees.
