Fiona Cannon OBE, Lloyds Banking Group director of Diversity and Inclusion discusses the bank’s recently launched work Returners programme.
What skills can returners bring to work that others may not have?
At Lloyds Banking Group we believe that having diversity amongst our colleagues brings about richness of thought which leads to better business decisions. Returners, individuals who previously held senior management roles but have been out of the workplace for between two and ten years, bring both a wealth of previous experience and a fresh perspective. Time away from a career gives you a different outlook, which often puts you at a unique position in a business. It’s always good to have someone question why things are done a certain way, and Returners bring another viewpoint.
Why is a structured route back into work important for returners?
For someone who has taken as many as ten years out of a career, the idea of returning back to work can be a daunting prospect. Even knowing where to look for a job can be difficult, as job descriptions often focus on most recent experience. Many Returners are embarrassed about the gaps in their CV, and a structured scheme gives them the confidence to be fully transparent about their position and what they think they can bring to the workplace. A defined programme also helps ensure a smoother transition back into work. The scheme is for a set length of time and allows for a period of readjustment as Returners find their feet again.
The LBG Returners scheme marks a long term commitment from the business as well. The programme is not just about returners adjusting to the workplace, but also about how the employer can adapt to get the most out of talent. A dedicated scheme provides a focal point for internal stakeholders, and a clear framework within which the business can review and adapt its practices.
How big an opportunity do returners offer to UK business?
A large section of the workforce has taken time out of a career at some point, and they offer a considerable wealth of talent and experience. Having taken a conscious decision to return to a career, Returners represent some of the most committed and single minded employees in the workforce, and UK businesses should be making the most of this resource. Many businesses cite skills shortages as one of the biggest challenges they face, and Returners go a long way in helping solve this problem.
