We’ve been recognised as a disability confident committed employer

Our ENABLE network and HR team are pleased to announce that our UK business is now recognised as a Disability Confident Committed employer

This is a government-supported scheme that supports organisations like ours to make the most of the talents that people with disability can bring to our workplace. The scheme helps us recruit and retain great people; draw from the widest possible pool of talent; secure high-quality employees who are skilled, loyal and hardworking; and improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating that we treat all of our people fairly.

Recruitment Partner Paul McMurtrie says: “We think it’s important for candidates who might be interested in joining us to see our commitment to diversity and inclusion and understand we have a fair recruitment process. It’s also important for our existing employees to see we’re committed to supporting our colleagues and making adjustments that will help them.”

We had already met the majority of the requirements prior to getting the certificate, but it’s been a good exercise to examine our existing processes and policies to look for gaps. We’re finding an increasing number of our clients are obtaining this award including HS2, Network Rail and Highways England, so it’s vital we meet the same high standards that are now becoming common place in our industry.

“One of the positive actions as a result of being certified as a Disability Confident Committed employer is that we’ll now offer a guaranteed interview for any person who identifies as having a disability or being neuro diverse and meets the minimum criteria for the role,” says Paul.

ENABLE’s co-network lead Dawn Lusher adds: “Although great changes have been made as a result of us obtaining this certification, it’s not by any means the end of the story when it comes to supporting colleagues with disabilities. Ongoing improvements are planned and the ENABLE network is open to suggestions so we can feed these in to our HR partners.

“This is not just a tick-box exercise but an ongoing initiative to improve our employee experience. We want to encourage all individuals to work for our organisation, and we don’t want to put obstacles in the way of allowing them to showcase their talent. We want to support all employees to have a fulfilling career.”

Being named a Disability Confident Committed employer is the first of the three levels to support us on our Disability Confident journey. The other two levels are Level 2: Disability Confident Employer and Level 3: Disability Confident Leader.

We’ve already started auditing and checking existing policies and processes against the Department for Work and Pensions guidelines so we can identify if we require any improvements before submitting our case for achieving Level 2: Disability Confident Employer status.

Being awarded the certificate is another step towards achieving one of our commitments to cultivate a diverse and inclusive work environment, where world-class talent knows no distinctions and people are empowered to realise their full potential as important members of our team.
