Department for Transport - Mentoring visit

Adam Soar recently joined the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) as a Vehicle Caseworker.

At a speed mentoring event, he took up an opportunity to spend some time shadowing the Department for Transport Resourcing Group (DRG). DRG manage the recruitment for department and its 4 agencies.

Talking about his experience, Adam said:

“As a new recruit to the DVLA, I was really surprised to see the wide range of jobs that the team were recruiting for. They ranged from Tank Engineers at the Vehicle Certification Agency to Medical Advisors at the DVLA.

“I spoke to people in the teams that make up DRG including the Resourcing Partners, Campaign Managers and Campaign Administrators. Everyone I spoke to was passionate about their jobs and they all worked together to show me how each different aspects of their jobs contributed towards the group’s objective of getting the right people into the right job, at the right time”.

Adam was surprised by the research that is undertaken to attract people to the department

“I really enjoyed spending time with the Recruitment Attraction Team. I always thought that advertising a job would be simple, but a lot of thought goes into it. Using tools like Google Analytics, they’re able to find out how much time people spend reading adverts and where people find them online. They use this information to refine the adverts and recommend attraction strategies based on this evidence.

“I enjoy trying new technology and using social media. The mentoring event and spending time with the team will definitely help me develop my own career path”

Charlotte Davies has worked at the DVLA for 4 years, and has been a Vehicle Caseworker for the last 18 months. Charlotte has wanted to start a career in human resources.

Talking about her time spent with DRG, Charlotte said:

“It was an interesting and eye-opening experience visiting DRG. The agencies covered and the diverse range of jobs that they recruit for is fascinating. I really appreciated the challenges that the team face.

“They are passionate and committed to delivering their best work and it really showed as they were discussing their individual roles within DRG”.

“It was definitely a worthwhile visit that has reinvigorated my own career development.”
