DCMS Volunteering Fair

It was great to see DCMS’s first Volunteering Fair draw a big crowd – inspiring us with new ways to get involved and a reminder that we can take at least three days special leave a year to do so.

Tracey Crouch opened the fair by presenting a Prime Minister’s Point of Light award to the amazing Norman Franklin. Aged 89, Norman has cycled the length of Britain, raising £100,000 for charity. He was not only a hugely inspiring person but an example of the power of volunteering to change lives.

The wide range of stalls at the fair showed just how many ways there are to make a difference – from becoming a Special Constable or Armed Forces Reservist, to sending a card to a poorly child through Post Pals. From helping young people through MyBigCareer, the Access Project or The Girls Network, to serving a community meal to those in need with FoodCycle.

And of course volunteering doesn’t just benefit the chosen charity. It has enriched my life from a very early age when I helped my mother set up a Centre for Riding for the Disabled in our village in Wales. I also know how much the Heritage, Tourism and Cultural Diplomacy team enjoyed their recent day volunteering with the Churches Conservation Trust. So whether it is part of an away day or as an ongoing individual commitment, I would encourage everyone in DCMS to get involved.
