Local MPs Johnny Mercer and Oliver Colvile visited the Nelson Project in Stonehouse.

Over the last 10 months, 12 ex-service personnel have been building their own homes, which will be ready to move into in July 2017.

The MPs met with veterans and our Group Chief Executive Paul Crawford, who said: “This is a great example of the social housing sector at its best. The veterans have been onsite every day, working with the teams from Interserve on the construction. We’re very pleased with the progress of the homes and great to see the roofs are starting to go onto the blocks of flats this week, and the gas and electrics are being installed.”

Paul Crawford added: “Having both Johnny and Oliver visit, and to have their full support of the project is extremely positive. I’m pleased that they’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the veterans who should feel proud of their achievements.”

Johnny Mercer, MP for Plymouth Moor View, said: “It was great to return to the Nelson Project sitetoday. Since my last visit in October, the development has come a long way, from first-floor level to being ready for the roof to go on.

"This project is a fantastic example of creative thinking and collaboration between a local housing association, a national construction firm, an innovative self-build charity and the public sector. Not only does it provide much-needed accommodation for vulnerable members of the community – both veterans and those with additional needs - it also provides those veterans building their own home with valuable construction industry skills to gain employment once the project is complete.

“I am proud that Plymouth is leading the way on this and look forward to seeing more self-build developments like this across the city. I also hope that it inspires other communities across the country to do something similar.”

Oliver Colvile, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said: “This is exactly the kind of project that I have campaigned for over the last 6 years as the local MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport. I was honoured to meet some of the ex-service personnel to view the great work they have achieved so far. It is vital we look after our veterans and this is a clear example of how we can support them. Well done to everyone involved. I hope that this is the first of many similar projects across Plymouth and the rest of the UK.”

The project is a joint venture between DCH, Community Self Build Agency, the Homes and Communities Agency, Plymouth City Council, and Interserve, providing 24 homes for people in the area, including 12 for veterans and six for adults with learning disabilities. The new homes will offer opportunities for veterans to be part of a community, training in construction skills, and to enable them to live in a safe and secure home.
