A day in the life of a resourcing partner at DfT

I’m 3 months into my role as Resourcing Partner, supporting the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) with their recruitment activities from attraction through to on boarding.

I work closely with; my Agencies Resource Leads based in Southampton and Bristol, my other Resourcing Partner colleagues, Civil Service Resourcing, the Recruitment Attraction team and Assessment Centre Leads so I would say that building and maintaining relationships is a key aspect to the role.

I’ve loved getting to know my business areas and finding out how diverse the roles within the Department for Transport are – such as Dangerous Goods Tanks Engineers in VCA or Aeronautical Operations Controllers in MCA. So many jobs sound so interesting it honestly excites me to work on some of these campaigns. If only I had the skills and experience to become a Marine Surveyor!

With so much devolved responsibility to vacancy holders – filling a post can be a daunting experience and I know how important it is to get the right candidate in the right roles.  I like to think that my support can make the process a little easier – advising on assessments and liaising with Civil Service Resourcing.

DfT Careers

Now that we’ve got our own DfT Careers Twitter and Facebook profiles, my campaigns can be advertised in ways that haven’t before been possible. It means people who aren’t using the traditional jobs websites now have an opportunity to see them on the world’s most popular social media networks. I’m also asking vacancy holders to share these social media posts and also add them to LinkedIn.

Across the country

It can be challenging working with colleagues geographically spread throughout the country. I try to visit MCA and VCA as much as possible which has really helped my working relationships with vacancy holder and HR business partners. When I’m at my desk in Swansea, I’m only ever a phone call away. My resourcing partner colleagues have similar experiences with agency offices based in Nottingham, London and Bristol.
