Data Analytics and big data

Data analytics and data science are becoming increasingly fundamental across most industry sectors. Whether they are delivering healthcare or selling dungarees, organisations need data and people who can turn data into meaningful information.

Data analytics

Data analysts use mathematical processes, software and tools to analyse sets of data. They draw insights based on their calculations that help companies to increase profits or improve their services.

Many industries make use of data analytics, including the security industry, policing, public sector organisations, banking, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications.

Key skills for data analyst positions include:

  • Mathematical aptitude
  • An analytical and enquiring approach
  • Problem solving abilities
  • Report writing and presentation skills.

Working with big data

In 2015, 17% of global companies reported making any use of big data collection. By 2018, this figure had grown to a whopping 59%, according to a study by Dresner Advisory Services.

Big data describes enormous datasets stored from, for example, browsing history, retail purchases, medical records or registration with government departments. Corporations and governments can process and analyse vast datasets to predict trends or create algorithms targeted at specific groups.

How to get a job in big data

Big data practices have been under scrutiny recently, making the people who understand the field even more valuable to employers. Partly due to General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), demand for data protection expertise is increasing across all industry sectors.

Universities are offering more specialist courses in big data, which cover everything from coding to data processing to ethics. There are currently more jobs in the area than people with qualifications. If you’ve studied big data at university, you’re in a great position to get a high paying job.

The average salary for a data scientist is £39,018, with senior roles often in excess of £70,000.
