Darbie Hughes is an Electrical Fitter at UK Power Networks
At the end of college I was sure that I didn’t want to spend another three years sat in a classroom, so I decided to look for something that was more practical. Looking at the options with my parents, an apprenticeship seemed ideal for me.
Most of the first year of my apprenticeship was spent in training, which involved a lot of travelling to different training centres and attending college to work towards my professional qualification in power engineering. Balancing studying with training and work was never an issue for me, but it did take a while to get used to spending so long away from home. It was definitely a big, sudden change, but I’m glad I took this risk!
Having finished my apprenticeship in September 2019 I am now a qualified Electrical Fitter. Going forward I am looking to further develop my skills and progress within the company. I have been accepted for Supported Studies to study a HNC in Electrical Engineering, which will be fully funded by the company. I am really looking forward to my future at UKPN!
Advice to students
Put yourself out there and talk to people! If you don’t know what you want to do, hearing first hand from people is the best way to learn about different opportunities open to you.
