CPS Awarded Top 75 Ranking in the Social Mobility Employer Index 2019

Our strong commitment to inclusion and equality has secured our ranking as one of the Top 75 employers in the Social Mobility Employer Index 2019.

The Index is the creation of the Social Mobility Foundation and ranks Britain’s employers on the actions they are taking to ensure they are open to accessing and progressing talent from all class backgrounds.

Employers are assessed on everything from the work they do with young people and their apprenticeships, through to their recruitment and selection processes and how people from lower income backgrounds progress up the ladder within their organisations.

We have achieved our position in the Top 75 for the commendable work we have taken to tackle this and enable those from lower socio-economic backgrounds to succeed. Just some of the actions that we have undertaken to improve social mobility include:

  • Well-targeted outreach work at schools with above average levels of free school meals/low levels of attainment and without existing relationships with employers.
  • Ring-fenced positions for care leavers.
  • Provisioned higher level apprenticeships.
  • Recruited staff from a relatively high number of universities, making the most of talent across England and Wales.
  • Introduced webchats to connect current CPS trainees with applicants, helping to demystify the process for those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Removed candidates’ names, grades and the university attended from almost every stage of the recruitment process.
  • Reviewed the recruitment assessment criteria and moved away from competency based questions.

We aim to become an employer of choice for talented individuals from all backgrounds. We believe that it should not matter where you come from and your background should never be a limiter to success.  There are many careers in the CPS which must be available to anyone who has the ability, talent and dedication to flourish.
