CPS Neurodiversity Conference 2019

Diversity and Inclusion.

The CPS aims to be a workplace where everyone can thrive and celebrate their unique contributions. As part of educating colleagues about different aspects and implications of neurodiversity, a CPS Neurodiversity Conference was held on Tuesday 8th October 2019.

The first of its kind at the CPS, the event saw 110 attendees hear from a variety of senior leaders and experts, including the Director Max Hill; Sara Harvey, a disability and autism campaigner; Helen Starkey, Head of Strategic HR; and colleagues from GCHQ. They also heard personal stories from David Orman, co-chair of the Disabled Staff Network (DSN); Samantha Rapp, Senior Crown Prosecutor from the East of England; and Naheed Hussain, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor, HQ Operations.

Naheed acquired a number of neurodiverse conditions in 2013. She slipped in icy conditions, suffered a chronic subdural haematoma which required brain surgery and more than two years of rehabilitation treatment.

Whilst speaking at the conference, Naheed said: “I've received so much help and support from the CPS. More can definitely be done though to raise awareness about neurodiversity. My personal journey of returning to work and doing my job with non-visible disabilities has been a bit like a game of snakes and ladder: plenty of positives, but lots of challenges for myself and for some colleagues who weren’t sure how best to work with someone with neurodiverse conditions.”

Delegates were also able to attend a choice of expert led workshops looking at neurodiversity from both an individual’s and line manager’s perspective and raising awareness of neurodiverse conditions.
