This week the CPS celebrates National Apprenticeship Week and highlights how apprenticeships work for individuals, employers and the community.

The CPS has been actively involved in the Apprenticeship Programme since 2012, employing more than 600 apprentices since then. We aim to offer permanent posts to our apprenticeships at the end of their 12-month apprenticeship where we can. Last year nearly half of our apprentices secured a permanent role in the CPS. The CPS has long recognised the importance of building for the future and gaining the fresh skills and attributes new people can bring to the workplace. Our schemes are not limited to any age group, and provide apprentices with the opportunity to build essential skills through work-based learning, achieve a valuable qualification, contribute to the business and help deliver justice.

Mark Summerfield, Director of Human resources says, “We are very proud of our apprentices, many of whom were working in a professional services organisation for the very first time. Many had steep learning curves to climb, and most embraced everything the apprenticeship scheme had to offer – enabling them to build the skills needed to apply for permanent roles either in or outside the service.”

The CPS offers Business Administration apprenticeships in a wide variety of roles in different locations across England and Wales. We have recently launched a new Paralegal apprenticeship, in partnership with CILEX Law School, for existing staff, as well as the New Manager apprenticeship. In 2017, nearly half (47%) of all our apprentices secured a permanent role at the CPS at the end of their 12-month apprenticeship. We currently employ 183 apprentices, who make up around 3% of our workforce.

This week, the CPS is highlighting the experiences of five of our apprentices, Paul Kinsella, a Casework Support Officer in Liverpool says, “I am still learning every day. Things are always changing as new technology and procedures come into place and we need to adapt fast. The best thing about working for the CPS is the different routes you are able to go down in terms of career progression and also the option to work within different units doing completely different jobs. The fact that I work for an organisation that has a real impact on society is very rewarding.”

Maariya Parkar, HR Advisor in London has says, “I joined the HR team as an apprentice in 2015. Completing my qualification alongside my role enabled me to learn a lot more about the CPS and the Civil Service as a whole. In 2016, I was fortunate to gain my permanent appointment. I challenged myself further in 2017 when I worked as the Senior Personal Assistant to the Chief Executive for five weeks. I had to quickly build relationships with people I met for the first time but this really gave me self-confidence and taught me many useful skills.”
