The words Early Careers on a VERCIDA branded background

DCH are delighted to celebrate the success of their students, some of whom are DCH residents that have taken part in the Galliford Try Skills Academy, an initiative designed to encourage the long-term unemployed back into work by offering work placements, full-time work and apprenticeships.

The Skills Academy is a collaboration between Galliford Try Partnerships and The Working Skills Training Academy of Cornwall College, offering a 4-6-week training course, developed by Working Skills Training Academy to give learners basic theoretical and practical training on a ‘live’ construction site, as well as work experience placements, site visits and careers advice.

Students were recently presented with certificates in recognition of their achievements.  The students have all worked hard to gain their CSCS card which is a must-have certificate to go onto a construction site. The students gained hands on experience recently at a DCH development scheme at Shortlanesend near Truro. They saw all stages of a housing development, ranging from learning about ground works, brick and block construction, roofing through to landscaping.

Leanda Flower Community Investment and Engagement Manager from DCH said: “The Skills Academy has been a tremendous success so far.  We are committed to maximising the training and employment opportunities for local people and we look forward to taking the Academy to Penzance and other locations.”

The Skills Acedemy has had around 235 learners through either the CSCS Course and the CSCS Live Site Academy (across Devon & Cornwall)  with 85% of the learners going into some form of employment (not all construction based). All learners who were based on the live academy sites would have achieved the Green Labour’s CSCS Card and would have gained various trade skills and knowledge as well as developing on their general working skills and ethics.

Andrew Johnston, Managing Director, Galliford Try said: “We are extremely proud of the Galliford Try Skills Academy and delighted with the achievements of all our learners who have completed the training course to date. We are committed to improving training and employment across the region and see the skills academy as a great way to introduce keen new applicants into the industry when they are needed most. We look forward to continuing the success across the South West with the launch of our next facility in Penzance later this year and additional on-site academies planned for future projects.”

Steve Maunder, Business and Development Manager, Work Skills Training Academy, Cornwall College said: “The opportunities provided by the Academy have created real employment  and progression routes to build a career in construction.  If you are out of work or considering a career change then come along to the awareness event on the 8th November in Penzance to find out more.”

The Skills Academy is coming next to Penzance.  If you are over of working age and live in a DCH property in West Cornwall, come along to our Galliford Try Skills Academy Drop-in Awareness Event on Wednesday 8th November, 10.30am-12pm at St John’s Hall, Alverton Street, Penzance, TR18 2QR. If you’d like to find out more about this and other DCH opportunities, please contact Helen Thomas on 01736 334513 or email communityinvestment@dchgroup.com
