How to find a job in retail
Whatever your level of education or experience, you can find a retail job to fit. Sales assistant and customer service jobs are a great way for you to enter the sector. If you want to build expertise in a specialist area – e.g. jewellery, wine or music – roles on the shop floor provide invaluable experience.
With a starting position as a sales assistant, you can work your way up to a supervisory or management position. Or look into apprenticeship schemes that enable you to gain specialist knowledge while getting paid.
If you’re a university graduate, supermarkets and department stores offer comprehensive and well-paid training schemes for management and logistics roles.
Salaries in the retail sector
Salaries in retail vary from £12,000–£15,000 for a sales assistant to £40,000-£45,000 for a store manager. Some international superstores pay experienced area managers in the region of £70,000.
Diverse and vibrant working environment
The challenges of customer service, stock management, meeting sales targets and working round the clock bring you close to colleagues. It’s a culture where you’re always busy and often engaged with the public. So, if the idea of sitting at a desk fills you with dread, retail may be the career for you.
According to an ONS report, the retail workforce in London is more ethnically diverse than the resident population. Big retail employers recognise there is still a need to reflect this diversity in board rooms and across senior roles.
VERCIDA works with retail employers in support of initiatives that improve diversity and inclusion. Many offer some amazing staff discounts, benefits and schemes to meet the all-round needs of their workers. Search our current list of retail vacancies here.
