Paula Hall - CAVE founder and volunteer

"We had a load of items donated from a lady who is an 'Instagram influencer' and in the space of one hour we took over £400 in sales!"

  • £5,000 raised for charity
  • 19 active volunteers
  • Opened in 2018

The Cave as it's known, is a colleague run charity shop located in our Norwich Island site. CAVE stands for ‘Community & Volunteering Experience’.

Born from an Aviva Culture Hack back in late 2017 by Paula Hall. The task? To come up with a concept and make it happen within 24hrs.

‘’I was thinking about how many people have a bag of clothes or unwanted items just waiting to go to a charity shop and how many people don’t use their volunteering hours because of workload, travel and commitments. Basically, the concept is simple, we have a charity shop that everyone can contribute to. Our people donate items, then our team of volunteers use their volunteering time to open the shop and sort donations, sell etc – all the usual stuff you would do in a high street charity shop!’’

Within 8hrs, Paula and the working group had managed to secure the unused premises and furniture to kit out the room like a proper shop, with donations from our people. There is no budget for The Cave so all the fixtures and fittings are recycled items that have been rescued from around the business. None of the items in the shop have a price tag. You only pay what you think the item is worth.

Since it officially opened in 2018, the team of volunteers have raised somewhere in the region of £5,000 for a number of different local charities, including @charitytbf @littlelifts_uk @norwichsoupmovement @pbhospice, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Insurers against Dementia. All of these donations have been matched pound for pound by Aviva.

At the moment we are continuing to raise funds for the Ukraine appeal.

“Since the pandemic we've worked hard to get back on our feet now that we have people back in our offices in Norwich. We're always on the look out for donations of good quality items, and volunteers are always welcome to join our group of Cave People!!! “

If you work for Aviva in Norwich, volunteering for The Cave counts as part of the UK 21 hours of paid volunteering.
