Celebrating Women with BNY Mellon: Melissa Fry’s Story

Melissa Fry is an Alternatives Segment Associate at BNY Mellon.

After graduating with a BSc degree in Business Administration from Bath University, Melissa secured a place on BNY Mellon’s Emerging Leaders Graduate Program and, in August 2019, was offered her current permanent role in a relationship management team in Alternative Investment Services.

“One of the reasons I accepted the permanent role is the work/life balance. It was important to me to work for a company that has a forward thinking view. I believe that if you look after the physical and mental health of employees, not only will they be happy, but they will also excel in their jobs. I go boxing after work and I can work from home when I need to – this helps me stay focused and feel empowered. All the managers I’ve worked for so far in my career at BNY Mellon have been understanding and tapped in on an emotional level,” said Melissa.

The Emerging Leaders Graduate Program is a one-year rotational development programme providing participants with an opportunity to complete three four-month assignments in different teams at BNY Mellon.

“It’s a great opportunity because it encourages you to be a self-starter and launch yourself into different experiences. The flexibility of the program also means that you can personalise your journey according to your interests. My first role working for the CEO of our UK bank spring-boarded my graduate career and empowered me to have informal chats, network in new areas of the business and find my way around the company,” said Melissa.

In addition, BNY Mellon has a women’s network that focuses on the retention and ongoing career progression of female talent. Employees also have an opportunity to participate in mentoring and sponsorship programmes.

“I’ve been really lucky with my journey. I’ve come across some inspiring senior women in leadership roles that have helped me and sponsored me along my journey. In my more immediate network, I’m fortunate to have a senior relationship manager in my team mentoring and investing in me,” said Melissa.

Melissa has led a quarterly Future Leaders Roundtable series for young talent at the company that has attracted sponsorship from BNY Mellon’s EMEA Executive Committee. With each roundtable curated in partnership with an Executive Sponsor the session aims to connect talent across business lines, increase exposure to senior executives and invest in the participant’s career development.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to connect the leaders of today with the future leaders of tomorrow. We want this emerging talent group to feel included and invested in the future of the company and their careers. We want to provide opportunities to learn, grow and develop the skills needed to excel,” said Melissa.

When asked what advice she would give to others considering a career with BNY Mellon Melissa referenced a leadership conference she went to recently:

“The speaker used a great analogy that resonated with me – “When you’re at a buffet you should try everything. Otherwise, you don’t know what you like and dislike! A simple yet effective piece of career advice when put into practice.  The experience I have had at BNY Mellon so far has been a great opportunity to do just that, and I believe that the company offers great career prospects for young people, under the guiding light of an engaging and inspiring senior leadership team.”
