UK Disability History Month runs from 18 November – 18 December. Its three core aims are to celebrate the lives of disabled people both in the past and present, to challenge disabilism and to achieve equality.

Counsellor Abdul

Councillor Abdul Hai, Cabinet Member for Young People, Equalities and Cohesion at Camden Council

“We’re proud to champion the immense contribution our residents with disabilities make to our borough and ensure we make year on year progress on issues including accessibility and strengthening the opportunities available to residents with disabilities. Our guiding principle is that no-one in Camden should be left behind.

“Today also marks a year since we launched our staff Disability Charter – we want to be an attractive employer to our residents with disabilities, as we know they have a wide variety of skills and knowledge that will help us achieve our Camden 2025 ambitions. We know that we are at our best as a Council by having a workforce reflecting Camden’s diverse communities.”

Recent examples of Camden Council’s focus on improving accessibility for its residents with disabilities include:

  • Continuing its dedicated leisure programme of sports and physical activity for disabled residents following the lockdown periods in 2020.
  • Launching a webchat service for residents who wish to report or discuss a housing repair – a service available to all residents, but one which benefits deaf and hard of hearing residents
  • A commitment to providing BSL interpreters for deaf and hard of hearing residents to ensure they can access services.
  • Deaf and hard of hearing residents can request a British Sign Language Interpreter, T Loop or Speech on Text
