Carers Rights Day 2016

Carers Rights Day 2016

Across the UK today 6.5 million people are carers, supporting a loved one who is seriously ill, older, or disabled. Caring is such an important part of life, however, many of them are stretched to the limit – balancing care with family life and work. This is where Carers Rights Day comes in.

Carers UK, the UK's only national membership charity for carers, is a supportive community that is calling for change. Led by a Board of Trustees that is predominantly made up of carers, the charity is embedded in the real experiences of its members with the goal of making life better for carers. Friday 25th November saw this year’s Carers Rights Day, with the theme of Missing out? Know your rights as a carer. This day is held annually by Carers UK as an opportunity to bring organisations across the UK together to help carers in their local community discover how best to get the support and assistance they are entitled to and know their rights.

With one in nine working people also caring for a family member or friend, companies are doing more to get involved in the workplace by raising awareness with information events and hosting a ‘Pop the Kettle On’ tea and cake party to raise money for Carers UK and talk about caring. Due to the stresses and strains often caused from balancing work and caring, it is little surprise that 1 in 5 carers leave work to care full time. To ensure they do not lose experienced and talented staff, the majority of carers are aged between 45-64 and at the peak of their careers, businesses need to be able to give employees who are carers the right support, through advice and carer friendly policies and practices. With the number of carers in the UK set to grow from 6 million to 9 million in the next 30 years, this is an issue none of us can afford to ignore.
