Category: Social Responsibility (Charity/ Volunteering/Environmentalism)

ENGIE are proud to be a signatory partner and support The Covenant’s promise made by private, public or voluntary organisations to provide support for care leavers aged 16-25 to help them to live independently

We have a proven track record of working closely with local stakeholders and existing agencies such as Employment Leeds to maximise the potential training and employment opportunities over the course of the delivery of all projects we undertake. We are passionate about inspiring the next generation of construction workers and as such were the first part of our business to have a Social Value team which consists of a Social Value Manager, Claire Preston, 3 no. Social Value Officers and a Social Value Co-ordinator .   We are proud that 9 percent of our workforce is made up of Trainees, Apprentices and Graduates (TAGs), which is above the national average.

We work collaboratively with other construction organisations, CITB (Construction Skills), trai

ning providers and other agencies to jointly address local labour and skills shortages.  In addition, we have always been and continue to be committed to an annual intake of apprentices to build future capacity.

We are involved with many employment and training initiatives and have a proactive approach to delivering solutions for local communities.

Apprentices

We currently employ 204 trainees and apprentices across the Central Region working towards NVQ Level 2 to level 6 (degree level).  In addition, we work closely with local agencies to provide apprenticeship opportunities through shared schemes.   All apprenticeship positions will be advertised to Care Leavers some three weeks in advance of going live on our website through a Single Point of Contact (Warren Dillon).    This could be in partnership with “Employment Leeds”.

Work Experience

Through work experience we support individuals to develop their skills, providing hands on experience and help prepare them for the next steps in achieving full time employment.   We will work to provide valuable work experience to care leavers which gives them a taste of what working in the construction industry entails.  We will target those in the care system in the first instance to offer such work experience before offering these placements to the local schools and colleges.

We will offer 12 no. care leavers work experience in 2019 at our sites and office across Leeds.

These can include: -

  • Shadowing joiners, bricklayers, plumbers, electricians, etc – traditional routes on site;
  • Site management, Quantity Surveying, Design, Technical, administration either on our sites or in our office at Bowling Green Terrace, Holbeck, Leeds.

Our strategy aims to reduce worklessness and raise local skills levels. By raising the local skills levels, we can help drive enterprise, create sustainable employment opportunities and support economic growth, focus on those in the care system.

Vacancies

All vacancies we have in the City of Leeds will be promoted to those in the care system in the first instance. Feedback will be provided for all unsuccessful candidates.

Volunteering

Volunteering opportunities will be provided and linked with local community initiatives in the City of Leeds that link with care leavers.

Community Links

Additional links with schools and the local community will be provided through the following:

  • Careers Fairs - With local schools and Colleges in the City of Leeds in relation to the careers available within the construction industry
  • Construction Taster Session - These events allow pupils to meet members of staff from a multitude of disciplines i.e. Quantity Surveyor, Planner, Joiner etc., to listen to how they joined the construction industry, their experiences and what a day in their job involves.  The events are design to encourage Year 10 and 11 pupils to investigate the diploma choices within construction, and for Years 8 and 9 to expand on their study choices.
  • Technology Challenge – Our team are Construction and STEM Ambassadors and will work with Schools/organisations where care leavers attend and discuss a topic relevant both within the industry and their environment i.e. sustainability.  We then set them a challenge to design a model village to aid in the promotion of that topic.  The schools then compete for the best design.
  • Mock Interview Training and CV Writing - Engaging with and working alongside secondary schools to meet with Year 5 & 6 students and provide mock interview training and advice on CV writing.
  • Schools Outreach Programme: Engaging with local primary schools to deliver Health and Safety and energy efficiency awareness sessions.

Practical support – DIY SOS Projects

We realise those that leave the care system and move into their own accommodation may need practical help.   We can support 12 to 15 no. DIY Visits during 2019.    We envisage this help to consist of:

  • Painting and decorating
  • Donation of paint
  • Plumbing in white goods
  • Electrical services such as fitting light fittings
  • Joinery – putting up shelves/assembling flat packs
  • Man, with a van – helping care leavers collect furniture/white goods from second hand shops (that they have purchased)

All DIY Projects will come through a Single Point of Contact (Warren Dillon).

All Projects will be no more than two days provided by ENGIE.

We would ask for one week’s notice to arrange a site visit in order that we can plan this in with our team on the ground.
