Capita - Harnessing the power of the Reserve workforce

It’s Reserves Day today, which gives us a welcome chance to honour those among us who offer their time to serve with our Reserve Forces.

The skills, expertise, and real-world knowledge that service personnel bring are invaluable to our Defence work, which is why I couldn’t be prouder that Capita is a Gold Award signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Our decision to offer an extra 10 days’ paid leave for serving colleagues to meet their Reserve commitments is an obvious win for all involved.

At the very least, it’s just good business sense. Our Reserves have a clear sense of their employers’ mission, are output focused, and often have extensive management experience from a young age.

But are employers doing enough to harness the power of the Reserve workforce?

It is a buyers’ market for vacancies, and the UK’s workforce has made it abundantly clear they value the flexibility and enhanced balance that was rapidly brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. This new normal is not going anywhere, and more potential recruits might now find they have a bit of extra time to commit to signing up.

It seems to me this is the perfect opportunity for employers to look at what they are offering. If we want to make ourselves more attractive to a pool of some of the most dedicated and ambitious workers in the marketplace, what else could we be doing?

Capita signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2019 and my team is conducting an ongoing review of the commitments set out in our pledge to ensure they are effective and relevant.

There are a number of areas where the Covenant could be used to offer greater appeal to Reserves – whether that’s access to healthcare benefits, guaranteed work-from-home flexibility for those who may move with a new posting, or through officially recognizing Reserve service as part of our recruitment processes.
