Caleb Herbert reflects on his Year in Industry with the IPO
Category: testimonial, early careers, Graduates, What Our People Say, Staff Testimonial, Graduate, Intellectual Property Office
Since joining the IPO I've had nothing but great opportunities and experience. It was no small change, entering my first full time role in a business but the IPO made the process welcoming.
From the first day I was given training to better understand the tools I was using. This made starting far easier as it introduced me to what I'd be doing over the course of the year. I attended meetings and discussions with key members of staff whom would be my go to contacts for the majority of questions. The IPOSecure Team itself was nothing but welcoming, I was fortunate enough to have 1-1 meetings with each of them to learn about their roles and how we would work together to support IPOs "brilliant place to work" attitude.
Coming straight from Uni I hadn't had much - if any - real world work experience so I was unsure what my role would encompass. IPOSecure and the extended members of the team were always happy to explain something if I didn't understand and I always felt free to ask questions when something was difficult. This shortened my learning curve as everyone was happy to offer support.
From its great atmosphere to exciting projects, I developed a great technical knowledge and understanding of my field - cyber security - and how this is shaped in a real organisation. I was able to collaborate with external contracts who taught me about vulnerabilities as well as being fortunate enough to attend large conferences hosted by Microsoft and McAfee, demonstrating their future technology.
Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better fit. I'd highly recommend the IPO and I am sure I will take all I've learnt in to any future endeavours I may face.
