Top 10 reasons why you should work at the Cabinet Office

Category: Returnships (Returning to work)

With nearly 7000 employees, the Cabinet Office is at the centre of the Civil Service and offers a wide variety of benefits to its employees.

1: The Heart of Government

At the heart of government, civil servants in the Cabinet Office work to:
-  maintain the integrity of the Union, co-ordinate the security of the realm and sustain a flourishing democracy;
- support the design and implementation of HM Government’s policies and the Prime Minister’s priorities; and
- ensure the delivery of the finest public services by attracting and developing the best public servants and improving the efficiency of government.

2: What we value

We treat everyone with respect, build trust and actively collaborate. Home to the most senior civil servants, including the Cabinet Secretary and the Chief Executive of the Civil Service, many of the professions and functions of the Civil Service and everything from the Government Equalities Office to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, the Cabinet Office is at our best when we reflect modern Britain and build inclusive teams who work better together.

3: Flexibility

We want everyone to be the best of themselves and to make the most of everyone’s talents. The Cabinet Office is committed to giving staff opportunities for flexibility around their working hours, and has offices in locations across the UK.

4: Benefits

We offer a great benefits package.  This includes a competitive pension which is one of the best available within the Public Sector. We also offer a wide range of benefits including Cycle to Work, employee discounts, generous leave arrangements and advances of salary for season tickets and bicycles.  We also have a variety of reward and recognition schemes.

5: Military leave

The Cabinet Office is commitment to the Armed Forces and offers active-duty reservists an additional 15 days paid special leave, in order to allow them to more easily complete their annual training requirements.

6: Career Development Opportunities

The Cabinet Office offers interesting, high quality roles and the chance to build a career with a purpose.  You can complete an Apprenticeship, join the renowned Civil Service Fast Stream, and join talent schemes within the Cabinet Office and the wider Civil Service. Cabinet Office is also the home of many of the Professions and Functions of the Civil Service, and this focus on building talent and expertise can help you follow the career path that meets your aspirations.

7: Training and development

The Cabinet Office constantly looks to ensure its employees feel they are receiving the kind of on-the-job training and support they need to advance their career. This includes five Learning and Development days a year and access to mentors, work shadowing and coaches. We also want to make sure our line managers are the best they can be, so we run a monthly training programme to support their development.

8: Beyond the Day Job

The Cabinet Office seeks to ensure its employees have every opportunity to develop well-rounded lives outside of work. Civil servants are encouraged to take five days  a year for volunteering, although this can be spread out over a longer period of time; for example, an hour a week over seven weeks. This is in addition to our generous paid and unpaid leave and a wellbeing programme, supported by a team of Wellbeing Ambassadors that help run events such as our annual wellbeing month.

9: Thriving Networks

The Cabinet Office supports staff networks as diverse as we are. Our networks provide care and support for their members, they provide challenge and critical friendship, champion opportunities, help change our culture and of course celebrate everything that make our people who we are.

They cover faith, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socio economic background, caring, parenting and the menopause, as well as sustainable living and Forums for all career levels, and we actively encourage people to get together, share their experiences, and make a difference on the issues that they are passionate about.

10: All Staff Events

Twice a year, we get together in London, online and around the UK to share what we’re working on, hear more about the political side of the department and the things that matter most to us. We talk, listen, attend master classes, run a market place and have even been known to ride bicycles and pet cute puppies.
