Business in the Community launches 'Race at Work' survey

Business in the Community launches 'Race at Work' survey

Business in the Community (BITC), the equality in business charity, has called for 10,000 white and black, Asian and ethnic minority (BAME) employees to take part in the largest ever race at work survey

BAME citizens in the UK are under-represented in British businesses. While 13% of the population comes from a BAME background, just one in 16 top management positions are held by an ethnic minority person.

To get to the root of this problem, BITC has today launched its largest ever race at work survey, and called upon 10,000 white and BAME employees to record their experiences of race at work in the UK.

Sandra Kerr OBE, BITC’s race equality director, said, “The reality is that the UK has a diverse population. By 2051, one in five of the population will be from an ethnic minority background.

“Evidence gathered to date shows that underlying cultures and processes may contribute to ethnic minorities not being treated fairly at work.”

As a precursor to the survey, BITC has analysed data from an online test that was designed to help individuals understand their own unconscious bias towards race.

Recording responses from 2.5 million people, the test found that people aged 18-24 showed the most unconscious bias, while women in the UK have the least bias of any group.

“That young people have more unconscious racial bias has come as a surprise,” Kerr said. “It busts the myth that we can wait for the next generation to solve inequality.

“Workplaces and society need to change now, and change fast, so we can plan the future we want.”

The survey is sponsored by BT, Sainsbury’s, Nationwide and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Tony Chanmugam, BT’s group finance director and ICAEW member, said the telecoms giant was “hugely supportive” of the survey.

“As one of the UK’s largest employers, we’re hugely supportive of this survey and hope that it provides a clear insight in to race at work,” Chanmugam said.

“We serve customers in communities all across the UK, and it’s important that our workforce reflects societies in which we operate.

“A diverse workforce fosters greater innovation and helps us better understand and serve our customers. We hope the knowledge gained from this survey will help us further shape out workforce and help us to attract and retain the best talent.”
