Diversity and Inclusion.

During the week of 23rd September 2019, the British Library took part in National Inclusion Week. National Inclusion week is an annual opportunity to raise awareness of inclusion in the workplace

The Senior HR Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion, says: ‘We value difference at the Library and are committed to building the Library as an inclusive employer. National Inclusion Week allowed us to highlight some of the great work we do across the library.’

Some of this work is spearheaded by our staff networks who participated in the week by hosting drop in sessions and a series of talks. We had some inspiring talks from the disability network discussing personal journeys through mental health and autism.

The LGBT+ network presented the legacy of our 2017 Gay UK: Love, Law and Liberty exhibition and how this is still inspiring continuing work that will be launched for LGBT History month 2020 (stay tuned!).

The Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) network discussed the introduction of ‘safe spaces’ and the positive work that they are continuing to do through events and network activity across the library.

We also held video screenings which focused on cultural awareness in the workplace, the impact of micro-aggressions and many more. Other information and awareness videos were shown about different disabilities and how the workplace can be adjusted to ensure employees are not at an unfair disadvantage at work.

The week was a huge success in highlighting the great work colleagues are doing in order to make ‘everyday inclusion’ a reality here at the library.
