The best part time jobs to help you through university

The best part time jobs to help you through university

The summer holidays might be in full swing now, but your university start date will be here soon enough and while you might be stocking up on utensils in Wilkos, you should also be thinking about a part time job to support you while you study.

University student loans aren’t as helpful as they once were, what with the rise in tuition fees and steep rent costs for students, so a simple Saturday job or a couple of nights a week of work might help. After all, how else are you to going to pay for a round on student night or order those new textbooks for one of your modules?

Here are a few positions to consider applying for when you reach your university town or city:

Bartending

It’s safe to say that student towns are full to bursting with pubs and bars ready for new undergraduates to stagger out of. But as well as spending nights with friends in these spots, they’re also great for work. Send a CV to bars and pubs located near your student accommodation or easily accessible via public transport; caterer jobs such as these shouldn’t be hard to find.

Retail

Saturdays are a busy time for retailers, so they are usually happy to hire staff just for weekend work to cover the more manic periods. Experience is usually a requirement, so you’ll have more luck within these roles if you have worked previously in a retail environment, dealing with customers and handling money. These roles are worth applying for: you will usually enjoy a discount in store meaning you can top your wardrobe or toiletries at a reduced price.

Student ambassador

Once you’ve found your feet, a job working with the student union might be a good option. Not only will it help you to get to know your fellow students on campus, but it’s also great role to put on your CV for those graduate positions once you are finished! It demonstrates that you have the ability to communicate with others, top organisational skills learnt through planning events, and reliability and confidence given that you’ll have regularly shown new students and their families around campus on open days. Look for roles that are available at your student union and speak directly to the rep in charge.

Deliveries

Whether you opt to work in the food industry or pop important leaflets through people’s doors, there’s money to be made in deliveries. Alternatively, if you have your own car whilst at university you could apply for a role at Hermes where you can work as a self employed courier making deliveries and getting paid for each one. You will be classed as self employed though, so bear in mind that you will need to complete your own tax return.

As a student, there are plenty of part time roles to get stuck into, and many offer great transferable skills for when you are finished in education. Support yourself throughout your time away from home, relieve the pressure on the bank of Mum and Dad and enjoy your time learning new skills while you earn your degree.
