Benefits of volunteering at Libraries in Enfield Council

Benefits of volunteering at Libraries in Enfield Borough Council

There is so much for volunteers to gain in one of Enfield Council’s 17 libraries where they can benefit from: training in new skills and personal development and with references provided this can lead on to many career prospects.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services, Protection and Libraries, explained: “Libraries equip volunteers with many skills and support individual development with plenty of social interaction and opportunities to work in teams and meet new people.

“At this exciting phase of library development a programme of volunteer days is attracting many new people.

“We want to harness the energy and enthusiasm that Enfield people undoubtedly have for their libraries and we can offer a number of opportunities to those who are interested in volunteering.

“Our volunteer open days explain all the volunteer roles at libraries across the borough. They are happening this month and further announcements will be made for December. This is a chance to meet staff who will be able to explain what is involved and help with the application process.

“We can promise volunteers a variety of experiences in one of our 13 smaller community libraries such as: assisting the public to find items; helping with the new self-service facilities, supporting library events and children’s activities and assisting customer transactions with the council.”

Libraries can be a good start for young people building up their knowledge for work or university; they can help people thinking about new careers or people returning to work. Also retired people can use their own experience in a library setting. There are opportunities for all ages, and interests in Enfield’s libraries.”

Cllr Orhan, added: “Volunteering in one of our libraries has many benefits that bring communities together. Just a few hours supporting local people, helping us to provide a seamless operation, meeting people and doing this in attractive surroundings in your own neighbourhood can be both stimulating and rewarding. This is active citizenship at its best.”
