BEIS: Creating an Inclusive Environment for our Employees

Time flies. Only a few days ago, the LGBT+ network members met to review the progress we’ve made. It’s hard to believe that it has been more than a year since the network was established, with participation from colleagues from the former departments, and set out its ambition:

“to make BEIS a great place to work for LGBT+ and all staff – creating an environment where people feel able to bring their whole selves to work.”

And what a year it has been: from the early days talking about basic things such as what the network should be called and how we find potential members, to the BEIS Listening Ear Scheme, the Allies programme, filling the department with rainbow lanyards and stickers, organising events and establishing many connections with other diversity networks – a lot has been achieved. And all thanks to the work of volunteers that put in their time and effort on top of their day jobs.

At the meeting we were also told that since we formed over 1000 people have joined BEIS. As the SCS Champion for the LGBT+ Network (together with Susannah Simon) I was feeling very proud for what the network has achieved, but I was equally excited to think that there are 1000 new ideas, suggestions and proposals out there that we can deliver in order to make BEIS a great place to work for LGBT+ and all staff.

That is why the network is embarking in the democratic process of renewing the leadership team. The window for candidates to put their name forward is open and we will shortly be celebrating the elections.  There are many opportunities – both specific, such as the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index role, the Communications and events coordinator, or more general and just helping out where you can.

You can also be part of the network and not be in the leadership team. You get access to our communications and events and have the opportunity to meet fellow network members and get as involved as you want to.
