Sixteen graduates from Barratt Developments have committed to raising at least £35,000 for the UK’s leading youth charity The Prince’s Trust.
The young employees, who work in business in technical, commercial, construction and sales roles, are taking part in the Trust’s Million Makers competition, of which Construction News is a partner.
Million Makers is an entrepreneurial fundraising challenge that sees teams of employees from companies across the UK competing to take an initial investment of £1,500 and make at least £10,000 profit over a period of six months.
Collectively, teams that have signed up to the scheme are aiming to raise £1m over six months to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people around the country.
Barratt’s group of graduates is aiming to achieve its goal by running four entrepreneurial projects.
These have included a Rio-2016-themed gala dinner in August; a simulated torch relay travelling between the various divisions of the company; a football tournament; and networking events.
David Cole, a 23-year old graduate working for Barratt London, said: “The Million Makers Challenge is brilliant, offering a unique opportunity to work alongside your peers, implement your own entrepreneurial ideas and develop your project management skills.
“The Prince’s Trust provides fantastic support and life-changing opportunities to individuals of a similar age to ourselves as graduates.
“Raising awareness and funds for The Prince’s Trust has been immensely rewarding for all of us involved, and has left a lasting legacy that will benefit both Barratt and The Prince’s Trust in years to come.”
Barratt Developments graduate and future talent manager Suzie Flynn said: “Our graduates practise their project management skills through developing entrepreneurial business ideas that benefit Barratt as well as the Trust.”
Eriko Kobayashi, who heads up the Million Makers initiative at The Prince’s Trust, said the body was “hugely grateful” to the Barratt graduates.
“This is the fourth year that Barratt Developments employees are taking part in the challenge, and so far their teams have raised a staggering £107,000,” he said.
Million Makers has been running for nine years now and in excess of £7m has been raised for The Prince’s Trust through the scheme.
The challenge is not just a fundraising initiative; it can be used by companies as a learning and development tool to build essential business skills and motivate their employees.
Over the nine years 86 per cent of participants have said they felt they developed skills that could be applied in the workplace.
