Barclays is the 2017 headline sponsor of London Pride, the festival that champions the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT+) community. This will be the fifth year that Barclays has been involved with the celebrations, highlighting the commitment that they have to supporting the LGBT+ community.

London Pride is an annual event that brings people together in central London to celebrate the LGBT+ community; it is also a platform to campaign for the extension of LGBT+ rights and acceptance at home and abroad. There have been positive shifts in recent years regarding LGBT+ rights, however, there is still a long way to go in order to ensure that everyone is able to feel confident and comfortable being themselves whether they are at home or abroad.

Over the years London Pride has grown in scale and impact and it has become one of the largest Pride celebrations in the UK, with over one million people attending the event in 2016. London Pride celebrates the achievements that the LGBT+ community have made through social media channels and advertising campaigns, this year’s London Pride theme is ‘Love Happens Here’, taking a defiant stand against hate and proudly celebrating who they are, amongst friends and the LGBT+ community.

The achievements of the LGBT+ community are celebrated through social media and advertising campaigns and there are a variety of elements to London Pride, such as the increasingly diverse Pride Festival of arts, sports, politics and the Pride parade itself. There is something for everyone to get involved with at the London Pride celebrations, you can find out more about them here.

Michael Roemer, Barclays' Global LGBT+ lead and Group Chief Compliance Officer, said: “Pride in London is a highlight of the LGBT+ calendar in the UK and a key element in our own programme of activities in support of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and we are delighted to be continuing our support as headline sponsor. The theme for this year’s event is #lovehappenshere.

“Our on-going relationship with Pride, both in London and across the UK, is just one of the ways in which we show our commitment to the LGBT+ community.  At Barclays we want our colleagues, customers and clients to feel free to express who they are at all times. We’ve made great strides internally in creating an inclusive global workplace, but we want to go further. By supporting Pride in London, we’re saying “this is who we are” and we want to encourage everyone else to be able to say who they are, without fear.”

Co-chairs of Pride in London, Alison Camps and Michael Salter-Church, said:

"We are delighted to announce Barclays as headline sponsor at Pride in London for the fourth year running.  They have provided the stable bedrock upon which a dedicated team of volunteers has been able to build Pride in London.  They have been supporting us from the outset, not just with vital sponsorship money, but with inspiration, ideas, introductions and encouragement.

"With their solid backing, we have created the UK's biggest free Pride event, enabling hundreds of groups - representing the community, charities, campaigners, companies, unions, sports, leisure, politics and much more - to proudly parade through the streets of the capital.  Whilst the Parade brings attention to the causes these groups promote and people they support, Pride is now much more than that.

"Thanks to Barclays' support we have also developed hard-hitting media campaigns around themes that are intended to bring attention to key issues, such as whether someone can love who they want - openly and safely - in London without fear of being attacked or discriminated against.

"We are proud that Barclays has been with us from the start - leading by example - and we thank them for it".
