Barclays launch extra large talking card readers for elderly customers to bank online

Barclays card readers: usual size card reader on the left with new larger version on the right

Barclays strive to provide accessible products and services for all their customers no matter what their needs may be. They have been awarded gold status by the Business Disability Forum for their work towards creating a genuinely inclusive and accessible environment for all of their customers, clients and colleagues. Barclays has now launched an extra large talking card reader to help those older and vulnerable customers who wish to use online banking.

Barclays have long been working to improve the accessibility of their online banking as customers have commented that the small card readers make it awkward and difficult to log on to online accounts. The new card reader is far easier to use with larger buttons to help those who grapple with dexterity or eyesight to enter their PIN. The card reader also features an extra-large screen and loudspeaker that reads out the authentication codes needed to make online payments. There is an option to use headphones with the device for those who want privacy while banking.

Ashok Vaswani, chief executive of Barclays UK, says: 'Often it's when you think about how to meet specific needs that you find solutions that help the widest range of people and customers.'

Barclays is dedicated to inclusive design, inventing new products and services that meet the needs of the broadest possible audiences, regardless of age or ability. They were the first major high street bank to deliver audio functionality to over 80% of their ATM’s. They introduced a range of high-contrast colour schemes for debit cards to help customers read the information more easily, have developed sign video for their deaf customers and bPay by Barclaycard to help people with sight loss and dexterity issues.

Customers can order a card reader from their local Barclays branch or by calling 0345 600 2323.
