Are You Suited To A Career In IT?

Blog by Patrick Vernon on Are suited to a career in IT?

In years to come, the world of work could look a lot different to what it does today. From the eradication of the corporate ladder in favour of a more open corporate lattice to working beyond the age 65 and gradually entering retirement rather than abruptly stopping, the workforce will need to adapt and adjust accordingly.

At the heart of this will be technology, which has already had a massive impact on workplace efficiency and productivity. Social media enables better communication, automation saves time and money, while cloud servers can increase website availability and performance.

For these reasons, you might be thinking whether your future career will be concerned with or closely related to IT. But how do you even know if you are suited to a career in IT?

You will enjoy solving problems

Say you’ve got a leaky pipe underneath your sink at home. If your idea of solving the problem is to put a bucket there and think no more about it, you probably aren’t suited to a career in IT.

This is because IT professionals have a passion for resolving the root cause of issues, rather than just masking them. For example, they would look up the causes of leaking pipes, go to their local plumbing merchant to buy the necessary parts, and spend a weekend getting rid of that annoying drip.

You have an imaginative mind

Even though IT is viewed as a profession where you will be number-crunching code all day with little to no creative output, this isn’t always the case. In fact, IT demands a great deal of imagination and innovation, especially when integrating new technologies into the workplace is concerned.

In order to take advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, or any other recent trend without compromising the safety and security of confidential customer or corporate information, you will need to put your thinking cap on.

You are an effective communicator

Yet another preconceived idea and incorrect opinion many people have about IT staff is that they lack interpersonal skills. However, effective communication is crucial if fellow colleagues are to understand why they need to follow online privacy policies or how their new software works.

Now that IT is becoming increasingly important from an operational perspective, you must also be able to relay the benefits of upgrades or updates and justify bigger budgets to senior executives and board members as well.

You want to keep learning and improving
The rapid rate at which technology changes is often hard to comprehend. However, you must recognise that the landscape of IT constantly evolves and your skills may become obsolete in the near future by failing to ignore the importance of learning.

After all, the Harvard Business Reviews says the skills that graduates acquire during college have an expected shelf life of only five years. So, to succeed at a career in IT, you must keep on track with current trends but also try to stay ahead of the curve, positioning your business at the forefront simultaneously.
