Anti-bullying week at ITV

The word well-being on a red VERCIDA branded background

This week ITV launched their #BeKind wristbands and banding in a bid to stop bullying.

Bullying is not just subject to the school playgound and one’s adolescent years, many adults suffer bullying in the workplace too.

Reports show that bullying is more common in certain groups. These include:

  • Public Sector ethnic minority workers.
  • Women in traditionally male dominated occupations.
  • Workers with disabilities and health problems.
  • Lesbian, gay and transgender employees.

Reports also show nearly a third of people are bullied at work with 34% likely to be women. Bullying causes stress and anxiety, ultimately affecting one’s performance at work. Many victims feel there is rarely a way out of these situations as more often than not the bullying stems from someone in a senior role, like a manager.

If you’re a victim of bullying in the workplace, guidance suggests:

  • Confront the bully, express their behavior is unacceptable and ask them to stop.
  • Keep a diary of the bullying (often memories fade, leaving emotion and little evidence).
  • Tell a manager or someone in a more senior position and present your evidence.
  • Talk to someone you trust and get support.
  • Join a union so you’re better supported at work.
  • When attending meetings, in relation to your complaints, always take a union rep or a friend.

“Together we can stop bullying, so let’s all put an end to it together by being kinder to one another.”- ITV’s Holly Willoughby.

‘Be Kind’ wristbands are available in Smiggle stores up and down the UK.
