On 11th July, 2017 the annual enei Awards ceremony took place at The Law Society, London. The Awards recognise and celebrate the organisations that have shown a dedication to achieving a diverse and inclusive workplace, as well as the individuals and teams that are working hard to drive this change.
Among those acknowledged in the ceremony were the Alzheimer’s Society, who were Highly Commended for the Representative Workplace Award.
Employing over 2.500 people with a further 9,000 volunteers, the Alzheimer’s Society is a charity which works to create a better world for those with dementia and their carers. In aiming to remove any potential barriers to working or volunteering with the charity and ensure an inclusive workplace, they appointed their first D&I Manager in 2014.
The challenge was to increase the representation of BME workers and volunteers as it was discovered that only 4.89% of Alzheimer’s Society’s entire workforce, including volunteers, was of BME background. In order to tackle this, Alzheimer’s Society undertook an equal opportunities data review in 2015 entitled Everyone Counts, with the purpose of demystifying perceptions of equal opportunities data usage, raising awareness of the importance of this data and increasing declaration rates. From this data, it was determined that there was significantly high levels of non-disclosure for the characteristics of sexual orientation and religion.
As a result, Alzheimer’s Society has made a number of changes to combat this, including:
- All recruiting managers are required to complete an EDI e-learning module, a new recruitment e-learning module which includes the principles of EDI and equal opportunities recruitment and face to face recruitment workshops
- Creation of a dedicated Policy (EDI) Review Group that consists of employees across the People and Organisational Development Directorate and has so far reviewed seven people policies to ensure that D&I is accounted for.
Representation of BME workers has so far increased by 2% to 6.88% so far, meaning that the Alzheimer’s Society’s BME workforce should be representative of the UK by the end of 2022.
