Money from the National Lottery Community Fund will be helping people aged 50 and over to find quality work across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
The five-year Age At Work project has had a £2.2 million boost from the National Lottery Community Fund to help it raise awareness of an ageing workforce. They’ll also be looking at supporting a variety of businesses as they face up to this change.
Benefits of age-inclusive working
It’s about more than just work though. The project will support may of the “missed million workers” who struggle to find work at the mature end of their career. It’s an important step towards promoting community connections and reducing loneliness and isolation.
It comes as recent data tells us that older persons are concerned for the future. And plan to work for longer than ever. One survey's respondents said worrying over not having enough money was common. Others said they would be bored or restless at home. At the same time, many are concerned about their health or fitness to continue working and a third expect their health won’t be good enough.
Mixed generational working
A representative from the project explained that one part of the work will be cooperating with 29 medium and large Scottish organisations to help them become more age-inclusive. This involved HR consultation support, and strategic evaluation, to help teams identify areas for improvement. This will include how to make the most of intergenerational working, a positive work environment, management best practice, and a commitment to lifelong learning and employee well-being.
Speaking for the Community Fund, a staff member said this project had been chosen to help develop solutions to a number of problems created by an ageing workforce. These include the demands of informal caring, health issues and lack of flexible working options.
Learn more about age-inclusive employers
We’re talking about this as we believe that innovative projects like this, supported in new ways, are vital for the future health of the UK economy. We already know that the UK workforce is changing. And while, early career professionals struggle to find the right post, so will employers struggle to get the full range of correctly skilled staff.
The generations at the opposing ends of the age scale will face similar problems. Creating more jobs needs growth. Growth needs skills. The only way to grow, and develop, and explore, is by coming together. Sharing together. Building a future we can all have a stake in.
The Age at Work initiative is not the only innovative organisation building age-inclusive policies into their way of working. Search now for vacancies with diverse employers in our regularly-updated database.
