Accenture’s perfect end for Black History Month

Category: Race, Ethnicity & Heritage

Black History Month

We are delighted that once again we’ve been ranked in ”The Business in the Community Race Equality Awards” which celebrate the outstanding practice, innovation and dedication to race equality and inclusion in UK workplaces. And we’re honoured to have won the Award for Progression and were Shortlisted for Recruitment, as we have showcased best practice and innovation, in particular for our “Accelerate” programme dedicated to supporting and showcasing leaders of the future.

This is the perfect end to an incredible Black History Month where we have explored being Colour Brave, Race and Mental Health and ultimately celebrated being black.

We want to see a greater representation of black employees at senior levels in the organisation, by focusing on increasing career progression; and ensuring our black employees stay at Accenture and thrive here.

So how we do this?

We brought together our African-Caribbean Network, HR teams, and global I&D Centre of Expertise to design and implement our ‘Accelerate’ programme, blending together biannual classroom-based, monthly virtual leadership development webcasts, and mentoring and reverse mentoring programmes.

One hugely successful learning event saw us bringing all our black employees together for a single day, facilitated by senior leaders, external SMEs and third-parties to support progression and build community camaraderie. Our senior leaders are not engaged for one day but throughout the year, with executive sponsors dedicated to supporting the recruitment, development, progression and retention of our black employees.

Our Accelerate participants have opportunities to meet leaders and find coaches, mentors and sponsors while educating all about the uniqueness of being black and how that may affect their working life. Having candid conversations about race can help those around us to better understand each other’s perspectives and experiences and to secure better prospects for future generations.

Whilst we embrace our heritage we also appreciate there is more to being black and look at the intersections, we address areas such as gender, sexual orientation, religion and mental healthand discuss how these can be influenced by our culture and our work and life experiences.

It is not all about career and progression, it’s about making new friends across the business, changing our culture for the better and celebrating where we all come from.

We celebrated Black History Month 2018 by exploring the theme around being Colour Brave, and the intersection between race and mental health. We kicked off the month of exciting activities with a panel discussion starring Accenture leaders, with an audience of interactive Accenture African and Caribbean Network (AACN) members. These events were an opportunity to get together and learn, have fun and immerse our people in a vibrant culture. On Thursday 25 October we worked with our chefs to serve up a special selection of authentic West Indian food and drink. Finally, our widely anticipated evening with Frank Bruno, was widely enjoyed and reached capacity with an amazing 174 attendees, an excellent panel and of course the celebration of our executive sponsor Andrew Pearce’s AACN Special Recognition award.
