Aasaa O’Mallo-Mitchell, Group Communications and Marketing Officer at Brit Insurance (Brit) talks to us about Black History Month at Brit.

This October for Black History Month we sat down with Aasaa to see how Brit supports their staff and creates an inclusive workplace.

Brit has a busy month planned of events and communications to celebrate with their staff. Aasaa commented how Black History month is reflected at Brit stating “we continue to share articles that are informative and educational, put on events that connect our colleagues across the organisation, and create an open dialogue. The leadership team at Brit encourages us to have open conversations, which allow us to be progressive and make a positive impact on each other and the organisation.

I sit on the I&D committee and am lead champion of Brit’s Race, Identity and Belonging Employee Resource Group (ERG). Before joining Brit, I had never been part of a resource group but I have learnt that you don’t need to be an expert to take part and make a difference. I simply saw the efforts that Brit were making, took an interest in the launch of our People Forum which encompasses ERGs covering 7 broad topics, and saw it as an opportunity for me to learn and be a part of our growth and positive change. Since then I have met many different people across Brit and learnt so much from the other Champions. We have implemented a number of progressive initiatives already and have much more planned.”

Black History Month 2021 campaign ‘Proud to be’ encourages Black and Brown people across the UK to share who they are proud to be.

“This year for Black History Month we are supporting the ‘Proud to Be’ campaign - I feel that sometimes we don’t self-affirm things we are proud of. However, saying ‘I am proud to be this person’, is a really important message. So, we are asking our colleagues to think about what they are proud of, to share achievements and some of their personal stories.

We also have a virtual Black History Month social quiz coming up which is open to everyone and including friends and family It’s an evening of fun for people to test their knowledge and learn something new..”

The ‘Proud to be’ campaign highlights different things for everyone such as Proud to be Black, Proud to be me and, also Proud to be a parent.

Aasaa shares “I have a six year old son, Noah. I’m very proud of everything I have achieved as an individual, but also as a young black mother. I think there are so many negative connotations, especially when it comes to being a young mum and having a career. I’m proud of breaking those boundaries, not for anybody else, but for me and my son. I’ve worked hard to balance the challenges of working and being a parent. Working at an organisation that supports me and even includes him as a part of the Brit family means a lot to me.”

One way that Brit welcomes parents as a part of the workforce is by creating inclusive events for families to join. For Aasaa the social committee events and the Marketing and Communications team have helped make her son feel a part of the Brit family.

“My son has joined me in taking part in Bingo, a British Sign Language workshop, pumpkin carving competition, Insurance Pride T-shirt competition and more. It all comes down to having an inclusive, diverse and fantastic company culture at Brit“

Brit also has signed the Business in the Community Race at Work Charter. Aasaa is proud that Brit as a company is taking the time to talk to employees and create a more open work environment.

She stated, “Brit encourages everyone in the organisation to be conscious advocates of inclusion and diversity. We know that together we can deliver on the commitment we have made, to being an inclusive workplace”
